Equip Your Children With Knowledge

September 27, 2021
Those of us with children know that keeping our home clean is almost an impossible task. How many times a day do you pick up the same toys off the floor? Or, how many loads of laundry are you swapping out between other tasks that consume your day? Cleanliness is not normally a child’s priority; they would probably rather do anything else. What if the path to a lighter load on parents starts by creating more independent, clean conscious children? If you’re still with me, hang in there, trust me we’re going somewhere with this. Kids in general have an easier time keeping up with chores and keeping their space clean if it’s considered fun. This can be achieved with a variety of different techniques.
Reward and React
For children even as young as toddlers, you can create rewards, contests and ways to earn money just by completing a few, sanity saving tasks. It’s important to remember that age-appropriate tasks will lead to more success. Children who are able to accomplish their age-appropriate tasks will build higher self-esteem and confidence in themselves so next time they want to help with a task, go ahead and let them! Not only will this help them learn responsibility and autonomy, they will learn how to use cleaning supplies safely.

Assurance and Reassurance
This next tip is often harder said than done but try not to nit-pick! Mistakes will be made, so it’s important to take time and teach them the correct method. By correcting them gently and allowing mistakes, you are creating a perfect opportunity to show off your leadership skills.

Cycle, cycle and recycle!

Limiting access to toys and supplies will help your home stay organized and your kids are less likely to get bored of the same old toys. Cycle through old toys to keep the novelty alive. And if they’ve truly lost interest in certain toys, perhaps it's time to sell or donate because clutter can quickly become a problem.

Following these tips to creating more independent children not only equips them with skills for the now, but also creates a path to becoming self-determining adults.
